About Karin

Dog behaviourist expert Karin Holmström Forster has been working with dogs and their humans in Portugal since almost two decades.

Originally from Sweden, Dog Psychologist Karin always had her focus on rehabilitation. She has worked as a nurse, massage therapist, got a qualification in Kinesiology and is still running classes as a Pilates instructor. She is also training Assitance and Guide Dogs

When she got interested in the canine community she felt motivated to improve her knowledge and started intensive courses with, Karen Pryor in the USA, Fernando Silva in Portugal, Audrey Finns and Gary Landsberg in the USA and Cilla Danielsson in Sweden.
All are international dog behaviourists that all very well respected in their field. Karin is currently finishing a three-term course on Ethology and on Dog Behaviour & Cognition at Linkoping University in Sweden.

Today she educates new instructors both in Sweden and the Algarve. With her company Pawsitive Dogs Algarve, she trains dogs and their humans full time and helps with dog behaviour issues.

As an expert in her field, she is a catalyst for change in dogs well-being and is a favourite speaker at dog related events. She recently was a key note speaker at an animal cruelty prevention seminar run by Safer Communities Portugal. From that an animal welfare umbrella group for shelters and individuals started, seeking information and assistance with animal welfare issues.

With her many qualifications, Karin hopes to further her involvement in dog training, especially service dogs.

In 1999 the half English, half Swedish family moved from the UK to the Algarve. Today their sons are grown up and the family is spread to UK, Sweden and Algarve. The family includes a mixed breed of dogs, including Snoopy and Abbe who are certified Assistance Dogs.

Karin recently started the organisation Assistance Dogs International / Alertalegria Associaçao de Cães de Assisténcia International. In August 2017 Karin became one of only two apprentices chosen per year to work with Alan Brooks, who is a recognised expert and has over 30 years of experience in training guide dogs.
With this training, Karin will be adding Guide Dog Training to her services and at the end of their training, dog psychologist Karin will generously donate the 2 trained dogs to 2 visually impaired living in the Algarve.

Today, I work full time as a dog instructor and dog behaviourist with clients all over the Algarve. I love my work and can only see a positive future for our school. At Pawsitive Dogs, we train using positive, modern, scientifically based methods that promote a strong, trusting bond between the owner and the dog. Many fearful rescue dogs are brought to us; the last thing they need is another tough training method.

This year (2016) Pawsitive Dogs takes a big step into the future of dog training. Together with Cilla Danielsson of Hundens Hus (dog house) in Sweden, we start educational modules for dog owners, which can also give you the chance to become a dog handler or a dog instructor.

I also help some dog charities with socialising and training puppies and they can then be re-homed in other European countries. This is a vitally important time for a puppy, as without proper socialisation before 14 weeks old, there are possibilities of future fears and issues.
I believe in reward based training and that training should be fun for owners and the dogs!

I am always open to learning from different trainers from around the world; from some trainers, you learn what to do and from others, you learn what not to do.
